1983 born in Buon Ma Thuot – Dak Lak – Vietnam
With a mother from Quảngnam Province and a father from Đànẵng City his family went to a New Economic Zone after the end of the War in 1975 and so Nguyễn Duy Nhựt was born in Buônmathuột Province in 1983.
The memory of this uprooting from the native place was deeply imprinted and became an indelible part of this artist’s character and soul.
In 2003 he came to HochiminhCity to attend the University of Fine Arts and was living for five years in a Buddhist pagoda; therefore he has undergone the influence of the concepts of causality, karma, and co-dependence of origination of this religion. Thus, his conception of life bears the sensitivity, the sharing, and the self-mastery and well-balanced serenity of a student of enlightenment about the suchness of existence.
“Since childhood, I have been accustomed to the life of the poor, in contact in the countryside as well as in cities, so when I paint my work is naturally close to their situation. Basically I paint what I like, but whenever I paint I always put myself in the circumstances of my subjects and their states of mind to find out my empathy of their actions and speech, to try to speak out in some way their feelings and thoughts,” said Nhựt.
In parallel with his staying in the pagoda, Nhựt also experienced the marginal lives of the destitute, for example his working as a motorbike taxi operator for prostitutes. In the meanwhile he was studious in his schooling and painting, and in his research on the genres, materials, and styles of the masters of his art. He also suffered much in his failed ventures in starting an architectural company, an event-organizing business, a mass media company, a cafeteria, a flower-shop … before accepting a job of an expert in the HochiminhCity of Museum Fine Arts.
All these experiments are visibly expressed in the process of his art, through various styles, schools of art, and the choice of his subjects. He said: “I am searching while I paint.”
In our contact, Nguyễn Duy Nhựt says that he doesn’t want to talk much about his creative work because he is still on his quest and he would express his views freely when it becomes definitive. But his works say another story, because they constitute part of his life lively and sensitively recorded, and they clearly show his firm grasp of the circumstances and the highly skilled mastery of his techniques.
