“I have liked drawing since childhood. I accidentally met with books about famous painters of Russia and their works; and the love of art rose in my heart. I was born and grew up in a countryside with ricefields immersed in salty water all year round (in Thành nhứt Hamlet, Bình Xuân Village, Gò Công Township, in Tiền giang Province) near to one of the mouths of the Mekong River, to a family without any member engaged in art.
The people of my native land are living in hardships with “one sunlight time and two misty fogs” every day from sunrise to sunset. Without any idea of disrepect towards my birthplace, I must say that I would lead the same life if I did not follow art. Painting has given me another way to follow,” artist Phúc An started the talk with that statement.
After graduating from the Culture & Arts School of Tiền giang Province in 1994, Phúc An devoted his efforts to find out and study under the teachers of art in HochiminhCity.
Phan Mai Trực (MA), Trang Phượng (PhD), Nguyễn Thanh Châu (artist), Hồ Hữu Thủ (artist) … were among his first warm-hearted mentors in his journey of self-discovery. That is the reason why, even well-equipped with the skills of drawing since childhood, it was only in 2004 that Phúc An entered the field of creative work.
These last ten years have been a patient itinerary of gradual transformation for him. Following the so-called style of Hyperrealism, he has expressed the flavor and image of his poor native land in all its beautiful, dreamlike, and vigorous lifeblood in each of his works.
“In art, there are the artists grandiose and lofty subjects … but also those of immensely simple ones. Artist Phúc An, by very ordinary images, has painted his own folksongs.
Through his works ─ mainly the description of the trees and plants, flowers and fruits, landscapes and peope of his Upper Mekong native place ─ Phúc An has effectively and attractively sketched the benevolent and unpretentious soul of his coutryside,” said artist Uyên Huy (Chair of the Arts Association of HochiminhCity).
That is also the concept of art by Phúc An, mild but decisive. “With an artist, there are no corner of sky, no beauty, no pain and misforture that cannot be expressed in painting. To move everybody in front of their works, artists must live and paint with all their hearts and souls.
I think that human beings are rooted in their earth, to experience the trials with the privileges of the space and time of their living. It means that I am a child of this country, of this people. In the same situation with my compatriots, I am thus truthful in my case. That means I try to realize my nationality in myself.” Phúc An’s real name is Phan Văn Út (the Benjamin in the siblings). He was born in 1970, and currently a member of the Việtnam Arts Association, the HochiminhCity Arts Association, and the Literature and Arts Association of Tiền Giang Province.
Since 2004 he has participated in about 50 group exhibitions and two solo ones, with nationwide and regional awards. His works are in the collections of many collectors from Belgium, Sweden, the United Kingdom, France, the USA, Canada, Singapore, China, … and Việtnam.
